Audience tape and audience shot DVD/Blu-ray. Second of two nights in Philadelphia. The first of five tour premieres is "Night", which replaces "Badlands". "Thundercrack" is played, granting the wish of a young girl who held up a sign with "Please play Thundercrack for my dad in Iraq". The girl that danced with Bruce the night before climbed on stage by herself at the beginning of "Dancing in the Dark", but was set back by Bruce. Bruce had another girl in mind to dance with, his mother Adele, - 2012-03-29 - WELLS FARGO CENTER, PHILADELPHIA, PA (Brucebase)

Audience tape and audience shot DVD/Blu-ray. First of two nights in Philadelphia. Rare performance of "Seaside Bar Song" in what appears to be the "classic" slot after "My City Of Ruins". The outtake from The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle was last played in 2009, in the same city. Bruce remembered playing it at The Main Point in Bryn Mawr - he's probably right, but sadly we have no record of it. Next up is "Does This Bus Stop At 82nd Street?", featuring a drum-off between Max and percussionist Everett Bradley. For it's third performance in three shows, "American Skin (41 Shots)" is dedicated to Trayvon Martin. Bruce downs a beer during "Raise Your Hand". - 2012-03-28 - WELLS FARGO CENTER, PHILADELPHIA, PA (Brucebase)

Audience tapes. Four songs make their tour debuts in Boston, including "Thundercrack" and "Jackson Cage". In the introduction to the former Bruce talks about his January 1973 seven day (14-show) stand at Paul's Mall, when "Thundercrack" was the show closer. Boston native Peter Wolf makes a guest appearance on "Raise Your Hand". The soundcheck includes a special private performance for a young fan who meets Bruce through the Make-a-Wish foundation. - 2012-03-26 – TD BOSTON, MA (Brucebase)

Audience tapes. Third show of the tour and Bruce really mixes it up with no less than seven tour premieres, only the third time this has ever happened. "Talk To Me" is the first song from The Promise (not including "Because The Night") to make the setlist; this is also the first time it has been played in concert with the E Street Band. Click the link above to hear it. "Prove It All Night" is in the third slot in place of "Badlands" which is dropped - also a rare occurrence. "American Skin (41 Shots)" is played, perhaps in reference to the shooting of Trayvon Martin in Florida. Clarence Clemons's son Jared joins on tambourine and backup vocals for "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out". - 2012-03-23 – TAMPA BAY TIMES FORUM, TAMPA, FL (Brucebase)

5. Quarter to Three

Notes:

“Like The Dark Knight Rises, so too must the Passaic trilogy come to an end. JEMS is pleased to release another significant Darkness tour upgrade, this the third and final show at the Capitol Theatre, two nights removed from the historic radio broadcast that would go on to become one of, if not the most bootlegged recordings in Springsteen history, Piece De Resistance. In homage to that bootleg classic, and in keeping with our upgraded second night title, Douceur de Vivre, we’ve dubbed the third night Coup de Grace, apropos, as it translates to “the finishing blow.” Of course there’s a case to be made for going with Bon Anniversaire, as at this show Bruce’s birthday (still two days hence) was celebrated with a giant cake featuring an unusual filling.

The set continues the looser vibe of the previous night and offers some appealing changes, including the return of “Racing in the Street,” covers of “High School Confidential” and “Sweet Little Sixteen” (introduced, per Brucebase Wiki, as “a birthday song to myself”) and a welcome performance of “The Fever.” The show is also one of seven known performances of “Incident on 57th Street” straight into “Rosalita.”

Like Douceur de Vivre, what makes Coup de Grace so special is that it was professionally recorded on reel to reel by a mobile recording truck outside the theatre. The result is another live-as-it-happened recording of incredible clarity. Again, that isn’t to say it is a multi-track, mixdown; Coup is a raw, mixed-on-the-fly, wide stereo recording done on 1/2 track at 15 inches per second. Compared to the cassette sources circulating of other raw board tapes from this tour, the quality here should be a revelation. Samples provided.

The transfer was handled as JEMS did for last year’s upgrade of The Ties That Bind and Douceur de Vivre so I’ll quote those notes once more: “There was baking involved, as the tapes had degraded in the [33 years that had passed]. The reel-to-reel tape deck was best of breed, what the pros use, in a proper studio, calibrated and adjusted in every way for optimal playback and capture at 24/96 using the best possible sound card, cabling, etc.”

There was one missing piece on the new reels, oddly right at the start where somebody must have forgotten to push record and missed the beginning of “High School Confidential.” WWe’ve patched that in from the extant cassette board source (thank you A). On the bright side, “Tenth Avenue Freeze-out” is now complete and we get to hear for the first time ever the previously missing encore-closer, “Twist and Shout.”

Your guest mastering engineer this time around is our respected colleague and friend Hoserama, who you should know from his incredible work (often described as better than official releases) on matrix recordings from recent tours. He made these tapes sound as good as they possibly could. Thanks H.

Please respect our wishes DO NOT post this on DIME. Please respect our wishes and DO NOT REMASTER AND CIRCULATE any new or remastered versions of this recording. Wayne Darlington- Description details for torrent "1978-09-21 * Coup de Grace Hi-Res * Capitol Theatre * Passaic, NJ * JEMS 2011 transfer from MASTER SOUNDBOARD REELS (24/96)" (Jungleland)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overall very solid recording. Love the stereo panning, tried to bring a lot of that out. My biggest issue with the recording is low lead vocals at times. Tried some tricks to bring it out, but not something you can easily draw out. I did a mix-mash of processing, but tried to keep the natural sound of the recording. Hope you like it. Thanks to the JEMS crew for tapping me for this project!” - Hoserama Remaster Notes

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2011 transfer: 1/2-track, 15 IPS master soundboard reels > azimuth-adjusted playback on professional reel to reel > 24/96 capture to .wav > Nuendo 4 edit, mastering and resample with iZotope, Waves and Slate plug-ins > FLAC - Description details for torrent "1978-09-21 * Coup de Grace Hi-Res * Capitol Theatre * Passaic, NJ * JEMS 2011 transfer from MASTER SOUNDBOARD REELS (24/96)" (Jungleland)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Soundboard tape. As with the first two nights, the concert was recorded by the Record Plant's mobile unit, both on multi-track and live-to-two track. It is assumed that the show was also filmed on the in-house video system, but no footage has ever emerged. Final performance of "Kitty's Back" on this tour. Bruce messes up "Racing In The Street", forgetting the lyrics. Bruce asks the crowd to choose between "The Fever" and "Incident", it's so close he plays both. Particular highlight is the seven song stretch after "Fire", including a rare transition from "Incident On 57th Street" into "Rosalita". There was no scheduled show for Springsteen’s birthday on the 23rd so they celebrated it at this gig – and, to his amazement, Bruce receives a very unique birthday cake onstage, courtesy of the band and crew. Springsteen introduces "Sweet Little Sixteen" as "a birthday song to myself". Released on CD 'The Bosses Birthday Party' (BS) and re-issued in 2004 as 'Singin' Our Birthday Songs' (Godfather). Early in 2012 an upgraded version of the soundboard was released, sourced from the master live-to-two track soundboard reels. The quality is similar to the previous night, if perhaps not with the same level of clarity. This recording includes the entire "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out and "Quarter To Three", which are missing from the old tapes. Available as 'Coup de Grace' from JEMS/Hoserama - 1978-09-21 - CAPITOL THEATRE, PASSAIC, NJ (Brucebase)

Audience tape. Following the keynote speech, Bruce performs an intimate concert at Moody Theater, the theater and studio for Austin City Limits. Tickets were only available via raffle to festival badgeholders who applied on the South By Southwest website. The final warm-up show features a 24 song set with plenty of special guests. Jimmy Cliff shares the stage with Bruce & The E Street Band for three songs, surprisingly "Trapped" is not among them. "Many Rivers To Cross" was played regularly during the 1993 leg of the 1992-93 World Tour. The Animals' Eric Burdon performs with Springsteen for the first time in an appearance that was arranged following Bruce's passionate speech about The Animals' influence on his music. "This Land Is Your Land" (last played with the band at the closing show of the Born In The U.S.A. Tour) closes the set, with the accompaniment of Tom Morello, Eric Burdon, Joe Ely, Arcade Fire, Alejandro Escovedo and Garland Jeffreys. Professionally shot video of five partial songs ("The Ghost Of Tom Joad", "We Take Care Of Our Own", "Wrecking Ball", "The Harder They Come" and "This Land Is Your Land") was posted online following the show - 2012-03-15 - MOODY THEATER, AUSTIN, TX (Brucebase)

Bruce Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball official tour began last Sunday at Philips Arena in Atlanta, with a 2 hr and 35 min. concert and 24 songs. Once again Bruce introduced himself and the band in pure James Brown style, talking about “The Jersey Devil! … The future of rock ‘n’ roll himself! … Currently riding the Billboard charts at the number-one position for four solid days”.

The setlist was similar to the two recent performances at the Apollo in New York and the SXSW festival in Austin, with 5 tour premieres: “Easy Money”, “Lonesome Day”, “Born to Run,” “Dancing in the Dark “and” American Land “. The skeleton of the concert is based on the new songs, the true backbone of the new tour, along with new staples like “My City of Ruins”, “The E Street Shuffle” and “Thunder Road”. The rest of the show is filled mostly with the songs most commonly played on recent tours, predictable standards such as “Waitin ‘on a Sunny Day”, “The Promised Land”, “The Rising” and popular encores such as “Born to Run,” “Dancing in the Dark” and “American Land”.

The concert ends with a moving version of “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” as a tribute to the late Clarence Clemons, an epic ending to a concert whose highlights are all the new songs, the horns, Jake Clemons’ role filling in for his uncle in most of the sax solos, and the so called ”Apollo Medley”. The result is a brilliant, moving concert, with an intense performance after a couple of months of strong rehearsals and warm-up shows. – The Wrecking Ball World Tour Begins (Point Blank)

Audience tape. Bruce officially kicks-off the Wrecking Ball tour with a two-and-a-half-hour show, performing 24 songs. Although "She's The One" was on the handwritten setlist, it is replaced by "Lonesome Day". Bruce does a bit of crowd-surfing during "634-5789". Premiere of "Easy Money", and the first appearances this year of "Born To Run", "Dancing In The Dark" and "American Land". - 2012-03-18 - PHILIPS ARENA, ATLANTA, GA (Brucebase)
