+ The Boots.net: This show, the first night after the murder of John Lennon, is one of the more emotional shows of Bruce Springsteen's career. Bruce made a short speech at the start of the show, saying, "If it hadn't been for John Lennon, we wouldn't be here tonight." All of the fall 1980 shows were long, and this night wasn't an exception, as Bruce did 34 songs, including the "Detroit Medley" and an emotional "Twist and Shout." Circulating under the title "The Lennon Show."

Thanks to Gchord for the art & Cosmic Kid for the info above.

+ Brucebase (18.09.2003): Audience tape and DVDs. Great sound quality and setlist. Tour premieres of "Souls Of The Departed" and "Factory". "Souls Of The Departed" hasn't been performed since 1993, not counting an acoustic performance in Somerville in February 2003. First time "Souls Of The Departed" has been played with the E Street Band - the song was soundchecked five times before the show. "Factory" is played for the first time since the Reunion Tour in 2000, in an unique arrangement, starting out solo acoustic and with the band kicking in on the second verse. "Living Proof" also features in the set. Final performance of "Thunder Road" for the Rising tour. Available on CD "A Beautiful Night" (Ev2).

Notes:

1 Played By Request from the crowd.

2 First “Santa Claus…” of the tour, last played in December 1975.

3 Small patch at start from video soundtrack.

4 Ssmall patch at end from video soundtrack.

+ Second night of three.

+ JEMS Archives: JEMS could not be more thrilled to release this significant upgrade of the second show at the Capitol Theatre, one night removed from the historic radio broadcast that would go on to become one of, if not the most bootlegged recordings in Springsteen history, Piece De Resistance. In homage to that bootleg classic, we've titled the upgraded second night Douceur de Vivre, which translates to "the sweetness of life."

And how sweet this set is, with a looser vibe than that of its predecessor and a few key set-list changes, including "It's My Life," the first "Santa Claus" since December 1975 and the rare-but-always-welcome coupling of "Incident on 57th Street" directly into "Rosalita."

We're fortunate to have many excellent recordings from Springsteen's greatest tour, among them the five radio broadcasts (now including the upgraded Atlanta pre-FM JEMS released last year) and numerous other soundboard tapes such as those from Portland (June 24) and Charleston, WV (August 4). What makes Douceur de Vivre so special is that it, like the radio broadcast the night before, was professionally recorded on reel to reel by a mobile recording truck outside the theatre.

What we get is a live-as-it-happened recording of incredible clarity: If you ever wanted to learn the individual parts each band member is playing, this is the tape for you. Which isn't to say that it is a multi-track, mixdown recording; this is a raw, mixed-on-the-fly, wide stereo recording done on 1/2 track at 15 inches per second. Compared to the cassette sources circulating of other raw board tapes from this tour, the quality here should be a revelation. A 24/96 edition will be forthcoming. Samples provided.

The transfer was handled as JEMS did for last year's upgrade of The Ties That Bind so I'll quote those notes: "There was baking involved, as the tapes had degraded in the [33 years that had passed]. This time, the reel-to-reel tape deck was best of breed, what the pros use, in a proper studio, calibrated and adjusted in every way for optimal playback and capture at 24/96 using the best possible sound card, cabling, etc."

There are two missing pieces on the new reels, at the start of "Tenth Avenue Freeze-out" and the end of "Twist and Shout." We've patched those from the video soundtrack. On the bright side, "Thunder Road," "Jungleland" and "Incident on 57th Street" are all complete here unlike the circulating board tape. The release of Douceur de Vivre is sure to coincide with the announcement of new 2012 tour dates, and once those dates begin, collector focus move to new recordings, so we wanted to get this out ahead of time. Now if only there were an upgraded video source to go with this audio…

Please respect our wishes DO NOT post this on DIME. Please respect our wishes and DO NOT REMASTER AND CIRCULATE any new or remastered versions of this recording.

+ Brucebase (20.09.1978): …Complete show available on pro-shot video, soundboard audio sourced from the video feed and a 2011 transfer of a two-track recording recorded by the Record Plant's mobile unit. "It's My Life" played by request from the crowd. Listen after "It's My Life" for Roy starting the intro to "Racing In The Street," but Bruce deciding to skip it and go right into "Thunder Road." First "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" of the tour, last played in December 1975. Early 2012 saw new audio and video sources of this show emerge; JEMS' 'Douceur de Vivre' (translates as 'the sweetness of life') is possibly one of the best quality recordings of Springsteen in existence (both official and unofficial) and is a must for any collector. This tape does not have the cuts to "Jungleland" and "Incident On 57th Street", but does lack the start of "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" and the end of "Twist And Shout". Also available on CD '2nd Night At The Capitol Theatre' (Winged Wheel), and soundcheck on CD 'Capitol Soundcheck' from Great Dane, both of which used the line video as source. The concert was professionally filmed on the Capitol Theatre's in-house video system. The resulting film is technically lacking, but very well shot with excellent direction. The two-DVD 'Live In Passaic - September 20th 1978' from Brucevideos uses a recently unearthed video source, and is a substantial visual upgrade over the existing sources. This DVD uses the JEMS audio. All video sources are missing the start of "Jungleland" and thirty seconds of "Incident On 57th Street" due to tape changes. Part of the soundcheck (including takes of "Wedding Bells" and "The Ties That Bind") also circulates on video.

+ Brucebase (14.01.2012): Audience tape. For the third year in succession Bruce is the main attraction at the climax of Light Of Day, a series of benefit concerts to aid the fight against Parkinson's disease. Springsteen begins his night by joining Garland Jeffreys and then Willie Nile on stage. In a repeat of the previous November, he opens with a solo acoustic "Incident On 57th Street" before making way for Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers to perform "Helpless Blues" with David Bromberg and then "East Carson Street". Springsteen returns to the stage for a 15-song set, a fairly standard affair, with Max Weinberg joining for the last three full-band songs. A solo acoustic "Thunder Road" (with the vocal accompaniment of many) brings the festivities to a close. Also on stage during the night - Light Of Day founder Bob Benjamin, as well as John Eddie, Garland Jeffreys, Willie Nile, Boccigalupe, Joe D'Urso and many friends and family.

+ Brucebase (30.08.2003): Audience tape and screenshot DVD. The soundcheck exists as an IEM feed (with many drop outs). IEM/AUD mix of the concert released as part ofthe über series ("Across The Border In Jersey", Ev2). The IEM recording of the concert also drops out every now and then - particularly during the encores. Rarity "Janey Don't You Lose Heart" opens the set and "Roll Of The Dice" and "Candy's Room" also included. Only tour performance of "Raise Your Hand", performed with guests Dave and Serge Bielanko of Marah. Tour premiere "Across the Border" is performed with guest Emmylou Harris. The tour's final "This Hard Land" is dedicated to Bobby Muller who is in the audience on the night. "Thunder Road" is dedicated to the memory of Jim Berger. "Mary's Place" includes a couple of verses of "Another Saturday Night".

-

+ Backstreets.com: In the world of Bruce Springsteen concerts, some nights seem earmarked as special before the first note is even played. Whether it's a birthday show or the last concert of a lengthy stand, sometimes you just get a hunch. There weren't many good hunches flying around after Thursday's standard set, filmed by a professional crew. So Saturday night at Giants Stadium (night 9 of 10, if you're keeping score) caught quite a few folks off guard as Springsteen raised the stakes and had the crowd raising their hands in joy, gratitude, and disbelief. As the filming continued--with still no official word as to why--Bruce and the band busted out of the gate with the ultra-rare "Janey, Don't You Lose Heart," and established new possibilities for a Rising Tour that is most likely a month away from wrapping. Eleven songs not played the night before, ten songs in the encores, two special guests, tour premieres, rarities, dedications...this one had it all. Highlights (and there were many) included "Trapped," "Roll of the Dice," "Because the Night," and the second appearance of "Pretty Flamingo" since 1978. Springsteen dedicated the main-set closer "Thunder Road" to the family and memory of Jim Berger,  who was killed in the September 11 tragedy. Emmylou Harris joined Bruce for a poignant "Across the Border," and the Philadelphia-based band Marah helped out on "Raise Your Hand." A special night for many, this seemed to be the show that said, "Hang on Philly, Jersey's back in town!"

-

Ev2: The IEM source has quite many skips every now and then - even more in the encores. Thanks to tattoodad and the uber project for 'discovering' the IEM source! ; Thanks to Neil for the audience sources.

+ Brucebase (18.03.1999): Audience tape. Public warm-up rehearsal and benefit concert in support of local community centres. Set includes live debut of "My Love Will Not Let You Down" and the world premiere of "Land Of Hope And Dreams". "Youngstown" is full band with a searing guitar solo from Nils, and will be performed as such throughout the tour - definitely a highlight of the Reunion. "The River" is a new arrangement with a long introductory sax solo, and a slower, more acoustic style. Many songs return after long absences - "Factory" last seen in 1984, "Spirit In The Night" in 1984 (with the E Street Band), "Two Hearts" in 1985. E Street premieres for "If I Should Fall Behind" and "Streets Of Philadelphia". Some single camera pro-shot footage of "Prove It All Night" circulates on DVD. Released on CD "Big Big Night In Asbury Park" (Crystal Cat).
