Mile-high and half-full, but a packed setlist for Invesco Field: 27 songs in all, and 20 in the main set. Denver gets a namecheck and a tour premiere right out of the gate as Bob Seger's "Get Out of Denver" starts the show. Like "Seven Nights to Rock," Springsteen had covered the song at the RCDS Benefits at the Stone Pony, but this is the E Street Band debut.

A very welcome return appearance of the '87 double-shot "Tunnel of Love" and "Brilliant Disguise" — and speaking of welcome returns, Kitty comes back down the alley for the first encore. Also in the set: "Leap of Faith," "Night," "Because the Night," and "Across the Border." Rising producer Brendan O'Brien plays guitar on "Rosalita."

Notes

-

+ Brucebase (30.08.2003): Audience tape and screenshot DVD. The soundcheck exists as an IEM feed (with many drop outs). IEM/AUD mix of the concert released as part ofthe über series ("Across The Border In Jersey", Ev2). The IEM recording of the concert also drops out every now and then - particularly during the encores. Rarity "Janey Don't You Lose Heart" opens the set and "Roll Of The Dice" and "Candy's Room" also included. Only tour performance of "Raise Your Hand", performed with guests Dave and Serge Bielanko of Marah. Tour premiere "Across the Border" is performed with guest Emmylou Harris. The tour's final "This Hard Land" is dedicated to Bobby Muller who is in the audience on the night. "Thunder Road" is dedicated to the memory of Jim Berger. "Mary's Place" includes a couple of verses of "Another Saturday Night".

-

+ Backstreets.com: In the world of Bruce Springsteen concerts, some nights seem earmarked as special before the first note is even played. Whether it's a birthday show or the last concert of a lengthy stand, sometimes you just get a hunch. There weren't many good hunches flying around after Thursday's standard set, filmed by a professional crew. So Saturday night at Giants Stadium (night 9 of 10, if you're keeping score) caught quite a few folks off guard as Springsteen raised the stakes and had the crowd raising their hands in joy, gratitude, and disbelief. As the filming continued--with still no official word as to why--Bruce and the band busted out of the gate with the ultra-rare "Janey, Don't You Lose Heart," and established new possibilities for a Rising Tour that is most likely a month away from wrapping. Eleven songs not played the night before, ten songs in the encores, two special guests, tour premieres, rarities, dedications...this one had it all. Highlights (and there were many) included "Trapped," "Roll of the Dice," "Because the Night," and the second appearance of "Pretty Flamingo" since 1978. Springsteen dedicated the main-set closer "Thunder Road" to the family and memory of Jim Berger,  who was killed in the September 11 tragedy. Emmylou Harris joined Bruce for a poignant "Across the Border," and the Philadelphia-based band Marah helped out on "Raise Your Hand." A special night for many, this seemed to be the show that said, "Hang on Philly, Jersey's back in town!"

-

Ev2: The IEM source has quite many skips every now and then - even more in the encores. Thanks to tattoodad and the uber project for 'discovering' the IEM source! ; Thanks to Neil for the audience sources.

+ Backstreets: Night 10 at Giants Stadium closed out the stand in style, with a fantastic mix of the old and the new, greatest hits and greatest misses, all for an ecstatic Labor Day weekend crowd. Mix together the last two nights of a lengthy stand with the attendance of a working film crew and what you get are the kinds of setlists that Springsteen fans have been longing for since this Tour began. If you knew tonight’s opener from the first few notes, well, step to the front of the line of The Legion of Bruce. The sounds of “Cynthia” hit the New Jersey air just after 8:30pm to make her live performance debut, and it made this show a real “yeah, yeah, alright!!” for diehards. Other standouts: “Lucky Town,” “Spirit in the Night,” “Lost in the Flood,” and for the second night in a row “Because the Night” sizzled like a fried egg on a hot Texas street. Um, and that was before the encores. “Kitty’s Back” kicked those off, only to be topped by the “will-he-or-won’t-he” (he will!) appearance of Tom Waits’ “Jersey Girl” to close things out. Springsteen thanked those of his fans who come to the shows night after night, with a special nod to those long distance travelers.

-

+ More Info: IEM/AUD mix. The IEM source has a few very short (about a second) skips but it's mostly very unnoticeable. The IEM/AUD mix is subsequently released on CD "Giants Game" from Godfather. Final night of ten at Giants Stadium. Only tour performances of 'Cynthia', 'Lucky Town' and full band 'Jersey Girl'. Badlands features an extra long ending with the audience chanting. Spirit In The Night played by a request. Mary's Place includes couple verses of 'I Don't Wanna Go Home'. Jon Landau plays guitar on "Dancing In The Dark".

+ Brucebase (07.03.2003): Audience tape - Show includes a one off-cover of the Beatles' "Tell Me Why", as well as a rare "Roll Of The Dice" and and stunning solo piano "Jersey Girl". "Mary's Place" includes a very short snippet of "Land Of 1,000 Dances". Bruce takes a moment after "Empty Sky" to explain the song's "an eye for a eye" lyric. See Johanna's Storyteller for more. Released on CD "Atlantic City Night" (CC) and also on "Atlantic City Remaster" (Red Coat), and available on another unattributed CD set. Most recently released as "The Tables Are Waiting" (Uber #40), an excellent IEM/AUD mix. The sound-check exists as an IEM feed - with a lot of drop-outs.

-

+ More Info: Obviously, the audience recording from this show was one of the best audience recordings, basically, ever.  The taper should be highly commended for his work on that night.  There were several times that I considered scrapping this because I wasn't sure if I was actually improving the sound quality.  I went ahead and continued with it if only so that I could have the opportunity to listen to one of the best shows of the Rising tour many, many, many times.  As for whether it is an improvement may be up for the individual listener.  The keyboards and percussion are a bit higher, as are the vocals in some places, and I hope I didn't lose any of the ambience from that special night in the process.

+ Brucebase (22.06.2003): Audience tape and IEM. Great show. "The River" and "Growin’ Up" are full band arrangements. "Badlands" sees the double ending again. "Mary’s Place" includes a snippet of "Dancing In The Street" in the introduction. "Detroit Medley" gets a rare outing. "Twist And Shout" sees the band ending the song, leaving the stage, only to return doing the song as the crowd won’t stop chanting. This show is available on the Crystal Cat release 'Midsummer Second Night' in stellar sound. Also available as a purported soundboard recording 'Down In Gothenburg' (Social Graces) although it's more likely to be an IEM. The only complete non-U.S. show known to circulate as an IEM.
